When everything ended there was a girl left alone, picking up the pieces. In the picture, you can’t see her face because she's got her head down. There is a storm brewing somewhere in the distance, but in the horizon the sun is still shining.

When I was little and I used to see my dad off down at the dock, I used to imagine this magical world he was sailing to on the other side of the ocean...giant sea creatures and mermaids...I couldn't wait to be older and go with him to see it all -- then I grew up and realized there was no magic in the sea. Now it's just what takes my dad away.

What I'm Listening to Today: "Wild Flowers" by Ryan Adams
When I was a kid I pressed this violet into a book for a project in art class. I found it the other day when I was cleaning out a bookshelf...it just fell open and there was this tiny purple flower, preserved for all those years...it was weird-- it made me happy for some reason...usually things like that just make me sad about the passing of time but there was something reassuring about seeing this piece of the past...I think that's a good sign...

When I'm going home right at dusk, after cheerleading practice, I drive over this hill to get to my house...and it's like I'm driving right into the setting sun. The way the sun is going down over the houses, it looks just like a sinking ship.
